Atkins Review: Crustless Chicken Pot Pie

Here's the question, is it a potpie, if there is not a pie? I don't know for sure. My gut says no.

I love the idea. I am actually a big fan of pot pies. We used to eat them a lot as kids and the heavier version of me was a big fan of the Marie Calenders ones you that buy in the stores. I love the flakey crust when it mixes with the gravy. Really, the idea of Atkins Crustless Chicken Pot Pie appealed to me quite a bit. It seems like it should be a pretty flavorful creamy treat, It wasn't quiet that way for me though.

Don't get me wrong it's not bad, it all tastes pretty fresh and what not, but it just seems like when you eat a pot pie you really need that crust to make it feel right. Otherwise something is missing the whole time. The veggies were good, the gravy was nice, but the whole meal was kinda bland. Just unfinished. It was lacking that magic that carbs bring to a recipe like this I guess. Maybe someday a scientist will create a crust for us low carbers, but until then this may be as close as we get. Oh well, I still say its an option they gave us, which never existed before so I am happy about that.

I think you were too nice about this meal. It was horrible IMO. :) And no, without the crust it's not a "pie"

I agree! This is by far the WORST of the Atkins meals! The "gravy" used is so gross to eat! This is the one meal I refuse to buy when I stock up on my frozen meals.

I have yet to venture out and try the Atkins meals.....your photo totally does not look like potpie to me! Maybe they should have just called it Chicken and Vegetables and things would have been better!

Susan, I appreciate you calling me out on that and I think you are right. My review may have been too nice. It just didn't have much flavor and we agree was no pie. It's missing someone to make me want to eat it again.

I think you guys are crazy! ;)

This is actually one of my favorite Atkins meals. The sauce is rich & creamy & actually tastes like the filling of a chicken pot pie.

BTW, you still haven't gotten to the new Italian Sausage Bake one yet. That's actually my second or third favorite now, after the pot pie and the chili.

I thought it was decent as well... of course I sprinkle some shredded cheddar and salt/pepper on it. :)

I just had this meal for lunch. Before starting a low-carb diet I sometimes ate Lean Cuisine's for lunch. The Atkins meal was a nice surprise with how much protein you get. I thought it was good (maybe I was just really hungry?) but also thought that the name was deceiving. How can it be a pot pie without the flaky, golden, buttery crust??

I thought this was really good. I've bought this meal several times. I didn't go into it expecting it to taste just like a pot-pie. I mean, there's no "pie" so of course it couldn't. Before buying this meal for the first time, I had made a paleo 'pot pie' recipe but did not make the almond-flour crust to go with it...instead, I just basically had a nice thick soup. That's what this "crustless chicken pot pie" was like. I added pepper but I liked the flavor. The chicken meat is much better and less creepy than what is normally in frozen meals (this coming from someone who pretty much had lean cuisines/healthy choice/smart one meals for lunch exclusively for about a year and a half) and I like the addition of cauliflower. I actually put that in my 'paleo chicken pot pie stew' the next time I made it. So yeah I think if you go into it expecting a pot pie, you will be disappointed. But if you go into expecting a chicken-stew-saucy-veggie thing, then you will like it. :)

I dump mine in a little pan on the stove on med. heat and add a little cream and a little grated cheddar cheese and I love it!

This one is okay, and I agree about the name being a complete misnomer. It has a bit of a Divan thing going on, so perhaps they should just drape it in Cheddar cheese and call it "Chicken Divan".

I get why people may not love this, but I do. I think it tastes great. While I wouldn't mind it with a Paleo nut crust, it's pretty yummy as is especially when you just need comfort food that you did not cook yourself. It's a great back up to hide away in the freezer.
