Show and Tell

I thought I would share some yummy photos that were sent to me from a reader. Louisa, who some of you may have seen commenting and sharing some great tips on the site, was recommending a couple places here in AZ that were near our current location in our travels. She sent some photos to help show us their low carb goodness.

Lousia writes:
The first one is of the CRAZY delicious protein pancakes at U.S. Egg (they are wheat pancakes with blueberries and sf syrup) and a low carb egg scramble. The second 2 pics are from Houston's (a burger with no bun with a side of sauteed spinach instead of fries, and the amazing spaghetti squash with crushed tomatoes).
Check out the photo's and if you have alocal spot or a favorite place to get your low carb fix send the photos over to Poormansatkins@gmail.com.

The Habit Burger Does Low Carb Lettuce Wrap

While I was with the in-laws recently we all went out to get some burgers. Everyone was interested in trying The Habit which had moved to town recently. I had written before about my experience with the Habit truck and wasn't sure that this would be any different. I was a bit wrong.

The first thing I see as I walked into the place was a huge sign advertising the lettuce wrapped burger. I decided to give them a try and see how it measured up to all the other burgers out there.

It's pretty good. In terms of wrapping they do a great job and it's very similar to In & Out in style. I just personally don't think that their burgers have as much flavor as others. They were quick, easy, and fresh, but the burger wasn't very well seasoned which didn't make it better than Five Guys or In & Out. So although I am glad another option exists, it's not a must have burger for me.

Happy New Year By the Way.

Rosie and Tim say "Happy New Year". Ok, maybe just Tim. Rosie says "put that camera away."
Well it's that time again. A new year means new resolutions for a lot of us. Eating better, more exercise, changing our outlook and attitude on things. For me I think that this year 2013 is going to be big. There's no doubt going to be a lot of big changes in store for my wife and I as our tour will be coming to an end in April and we will have to settle back into a normal life somewhere. There's probably a lot more in store that I am not prepared for too.

I'm normally not big on making resolutions but I do think that they can be helpful to a lot of people. My wife and I were talking about how silly it is for people to be negative about resolutions. The way we see it is that if people want to better themselves, than who cares if its through the ritual of starting a new year. Sometimes it just helps to say it.

As a matter of fact here's a couple changes for myself I would like to see in the new year.

1. This year I resolve to be more diligent about my writing. Get things finished.
2. This year I resolve to find a more comfortable balance with Atkins. No more guilt for the occasional carbs.
3. This year I resolve to read more books.
4. This year I resolve to be more creative.

There I said it. Now lets see how long it lasts.

What resolutions do you have?

El Torito Grilled Chicken Taco Salad as a Low Carb Choice

1/2/2013

During a recent family weekend we had a big get together with extended family for lunch. We ended up at El Torito Mexican restaurant. Most of the things on the menu would be off limits, so I tried to just keep my eyes focus on the salad portion of the menu. I decided to go with the Grilled Chicken Taco Salad. Made up of Crisp Roman, grilled chicken, fresh pico de gallo, cotijo cheese, avocado, tortilla strips, and roasted pepita's with your choice of dressing. I went with a cilantro dressing that seemed close to a mexican ranch. I figured that is was a bit lower in carb count. You may also want to say no tortilla strips if you are doing induction so you can keep the carbs very low. I kept some, but pulled some off when they brought it to me. It was very yummy and fresh. Its not cheap, but it was a safe choice at a mexican restaurant like this.
